won't eat heartguard

Question:
romeo is on heartguard. he had the bloodtest and i bought the chewables. one problem- he won't eat it. i tried putting it in his mouth and he spits it out. i put his food away and took him for a long walk so he would be hungry. he still won't eat it. last year he ate it will no problem. what do i do???

Answer:
same thing with my doggies, even though it's flavored they know......and spit it out and roll over and act funny, lol.
you will have to feed them manually, you have to place the tablet inside on one side of their mouths and put it near their throat....then you have to close their mouth (to make sure it doesn't drop out) and most importantly...you have to lift their head up and rub their throat in and up/down for about 6-8 times.
Remember, you have to place the tablet pretty close to their "tonsils" near the throat. and lift their head up.
LOL, but becareful, after you think they swallowed it; wait......my lulu sometimes holds it by her teeth and then spits it out, LOL.
hope everything goes ok! =)

Answer:
thanks for your input. i'm going upstairs right now to try it your way. thanks again.

Answer:
yippie he ate it!!!!! only half.. i have no clue where he hid the other half. he's only 5lbs so will half be ok?

Answer:
suggestion for next time, mash it up mixing it into a favorite treat like a piece of turkey or if you feed canned.
hope this makes it a bit easier

Answer:
:yeahthat: And I also halve mine and wrap cheese around each half and give as treat. They love getting their medicine now, lol.

Answer:
You got great advise - the smaller the piece the better my girls eat theirs....and mushing it or cutting it up in tiny tiny pieces and mixing it in something yummy will work also.

Answer:
Dezi would not take her pill either. The vet told me to buy pill pockets. It's like a treat and you put the pill inside the treat (it has a pocket for the pill) then you give it to them as if were a treat.

I have great success hiding medicine in cottage cheese. Tucker loves it and because of the consistancy he doesn't realize he's eating the pill also. Hope this helps.

Answer:
Rylie LOVES his dog food, so when it comes time to give him medicine, I just dip the pill into his dog food and he gobbles it right up! Right now he's on ID through my vet and he loves that too! So I smear ID dog food all over his medication and he eats it and can't tell he's being tricked!
